Extreme Makeover

By the Cayman Islands Fund Administrators Association

The Cayman Islands Fund Administrators Association (“CIFAA”) was looking for a face-lift for its logo and the Executive Committee decided to turn the task over to a far broader pool of talent in the form of and “Extreme Makeover” logo design contest open to all students in the Cayman Islands.

CIFAA is the national association which represents companies that provide fund administration services to the over 9,000 funds domiciled in the Cayman Islands. This active professional body has its own Code of Practice dedicated to the provision of a reliable, first-class service to satisfy specific client needs. This rapidly expanding sector of the Caymanian economy provides job opportunities both directly in the fund administration industry and through related services and professions. CIFAA also provides educational opportunities to Caymanians and residents through scholarships and locally run seminars that focus on the industry and its developments.

We reached out to the student pool in the Cayman Islands with an opportunity for some creative fun while giving CIFAA an opportunity to increase awareness of the organisation, the fund administration industry and the career opportunities within our industry.

The winner of the contest, Tracey Burns, a student at ICCI, with assistance from son Daniel, a year 7 student at St. Ignatius Catholic School, received a Nintendo Wii for their winning design. CIFAA have also made a $500 donation to ICCI.

IMPORTANT PROGRAM CHANGES

By Scott Cummings, Dean.

Our accrediting agency ACICS has approved changes to two of our programs. The B.S. Community Services degree will now be called B.S. Human and Social Services. The previously named B.S. Business Administration-International Finance concentration will now be called B.S. Business Administration-Finance concentration. The courses required for both degrees are unchanged.

These changes do not affect students currently enrolled in those programs. If you are already in the Community Services program and wish to graduate under that program name you may do so, if you want to graduate under the new program name simply fill out a new program declaration form declaring for the new name. Students in the International Finance concentration may similarly change to the new name if they choose.

New students entering the programs effective July 18th will enter under the new program names.

If you have any questions about how this may affect you please contact the Office of the Dean.

WHAT IS THE FLORIDA SEMINAR ALL ABOUT?

by Kerene Anderson-Wright

The business and society seminar in Spring Quarter highlighted the interaction of businesses within the societies; their existence, their growth and their success. The seminar was attended by 21 students and was well organized, very informative and very socially oriented. Apart from the classroom lecture, the group visited the following learning sites where lectures were also conducted: Port EverGlades, Restaurant, Chamber of Commerce, Honda and AH-TAH-THI-KI Musuem.

Port EverGlades

The group got the opportunity to tour Port EverGlades and learnt that it is the third largest this year in the world of cargo shipping, international trade to tourism and cruise line. It remains steadfast in its dedication to careful maintenance of ecologically sound growth; a balance between commerce and the environment and one of the most diverse ecosystems in the country. By 2011 Port EverGlades is expected to be the largest port in the world, as it will be getting a large ship named Genesis that will enhance the port’s operation.

Pizza Pasta Café

The group got the opportunity to have lunch at Pizza Pasta Café an Italian restaurant. There we were lectured by Hollywood economist who enlightened us of the economic crisis; hence Europeans investors are now been encouraged to come into to Fort Lauderdale and buy property so as to enhance the economy.

Chamber of Commerce

The group met with four (4) representatives from Chamber of Commerce. They spoke to us about the importance of community involvement, how to become our own boss, the purpose of the Chamber of Commerce and the benefits of been a business lawyer.

Honda- Rick Case Automobiles

The group got a tour of Honda facility the largest dealership in the world and learnt of its existence and successful operation. We learnt that Honda operation started in 1962 as a small garbage and gradually grow over the years into a massive company with different departments such as motor vehicles dealership, service garbage, service station, body shop, marriage chapel and loan financing. Some of these departments are generating income in ten thousand dollars margin while the body shop department is generating one million dollars per month.

AH-TAH-THI-KI Musuem

The group toured the Seminole Indian Tribe’s Museum guided by van who lectured us about their business and the society as well as their history of survival during the 1800s. We were told of the battle between the American’s soldiers and the tribes and how the tribes off the herb of the earth in the swamp for survival. The Seminole tribe is one of the two tribes that did not surrendered to the Americans’ government. They are now are reaping the benefits as every child born in their tribe is given a cheque each month from the Americans’ government and they owned the big Hard Rock Café world wide except for the franchise names.

BECOMING A SUCCESSFUL GRADUATE STUDENT

By Sonjia Kenya, Ph.D.

Most people enroll in graduate school to advance their career. But when it comes to landing a top position in their field of choice, I often tell my students, “It doesn’t matter where you went to school or how well you did in class.Work ethic, determination, and other personal attributes are what distinguish you from the competition and make you more desirable than other candidates seeking your job.”

Aside from intellectual ability, there are several other characteristics of graduate students who succeed at building their ideal career. This series of short articles will explore the various factors that influence graduate school and career success.

First, we’ll discuss discipline and networking.

Discipline

Try to do some work in your field or learn something new every day. Do not simply pass your courses but absorb the learning concepts and consider how they may be utilized to address a potential situation at your current or future job. Graduate students who secure ideal positions don’t ‘squish’ all of their learning into performing for a test, but have practiced, and become skilled applying the learning objectives from class towards future success at work. This will be evident to those in charge of hiring future staff.

Networking Ability

The importance of professional networking cannot be overstated, especially in a small community such as Cayman. Make yourself known to the hiring professionals of organizations from which you may eventually seek a job. Attend professional mixers and treat them as work events with specific goals to accomplish, not as social opportunities to get intoxicated or mingle without purpose. For example, make it a point to learn about a company’s hiring process through talking to the HR manager or discuss job satisfaction with employees at a particular organization to determine whether you may be a good ‘fit’ within a company of interest.

The next “Successful Graduate Student” article will focus on maintaining mental health and the value of being flexible with professors, administration officials, and peers at your graduate school.

Movie Night

by Director of Student Services, Anita Smith.

Imagine settling down in a comfortable chair, snacks galore, a fifty inch screen, and good company - put that all together and you have ICCI's first Movie Night held on Saturday 10th of May presented by the Student Activities Committee. It was a small but nice mixture of students, their families and staff. The movie for the evening was "August Rush" which everyone enjoyed.

Of course, no movie night is complete without an awards ceremony and the Oscar for the evening went to Isabel Mason who answered our ICCI Trivia question correctly and won $100 dollars off of her tuition for next term. Congrats Isabel !!
If you missed Movie Night, don't worry, another fun filled event will premiere within the next few months, we will keep you posted.

STUDENT'S CORNER

Drought

By Kerene Anderson-Wright

Rain stopped falling,
The earth is cracking,
The grass is fading,
And the leaves are shedding,
Like ripe mangoes dropping,
This is devastating.

Rain, Rain, oh Rain.
Pour in the plain,
Leak down the drain,
To release the strain,
From the earth’s vane,
Like a moving train,

To all 2008 prospective graduates
