Why
did you choose to attend ICCI?
I attended ICCI because It was an accredited local institution, the
hours were flexible-I could work fulltime and still attend classes in
the evenings and had heard that the professors were good.
What
was your experience here like? I
have had a truly phenomenal experience at ICCI. The
name "International College of the Cayman Islands” is quite
fitting. It becomes obvious as you start your first class and it
continues to profess its name as the quarters go by. A true potpourri
of nations. When I attended, we truly had a diverse staff and
student population. We had the privilege to discuss and share ideas,
cultures and customs with people from all over the world in the
context of a small campus and an intimate setting.
How
fortunate we were to have professors who took such keen interest in
us-excellent professors who were qualified, versatile and
professional. Individuals who would find time outside of school hours
to help us with an equation or an assignment that we deemed too
complex in our assessment.
How
did attending ICCI make a difference in your life?
ICCI
has made a tremendous difference in my life. Because of ICCI, I have
made many wonderful friends through the college. It provided me the
opportunity to further my education locally. When I attended ICCI, I
was seeking the make a better income. They gave me that opportunity.
ICCI was not just a place to attend classes it grew on me and I found
myself feeling more than a student. ICCI became a family and I felt I
wanted to give back and be a part of this great institution.
What
are some of your most memorable moments here? This
is difficult as I have quite a few memorable experiences at the
college. In the winter
of 2002 when I was pursuing my Masters Degree. Dr. Dounce was our
professor for “Multicultural Management Class”
We
were all seated in FH 3 waiting for her to arrive. Suddenly there was
a blackout! Newlands was in total darkness. There was no
electricity. We could hardly see our classmates beside us. Everyone
was so excited because there was no way we could have class now. We
started to make arrangements to return home. Suddenly a little light
that seemed to be walking by itself came inside our class. It was Dr.
Dounce, carrying a candle. We were shocked at this woman’s
determination to have class. Next door to us was her Husband Mr.
Dounce who was busy teaching his class wearing a miner’s hat!
You
know with the light on the front! Disappointed then to have class is
an appreciation now. They were determined to teach despite the
obstacles.
How
did you hear about ICCI in the first place?
From colleagues and friends
Where
were you born?
I was born in St. Catherine, Jamaica. I grew up in the cool hills of
Above Rocks and later lived in Kingston to attend High School and
Teachers College.

My story...
I arrived in Grand Cayman August 20, 1975 as a young teenager from
Texas. I attended the Cayman Islands High School for two years and
graduated at 16. Upon graduation, I felt I was too young to join the
workforce and I did not have a desire to continue on to Sixth Form or go
overseas to study. I loved Cayman from the beginning and wanted to make
it my home. It was recommended to me by Mr. Jim Bodden to enroll at
ICCI to further my studies. So I applied for a scholarship and was
accepted as a Business major with concentration in Hotel Management.
I enjoyed learning at ICCI and quickly made new friends with both
students and professors. The four years I attended there taught me life
skills in working with people and gave me knowledge of management and
accounting practices which I continue to use today in my Property
Management business.
By far my most memorable moment happened one evening when I was outside
Strain Hall leaning against the building before class began and I
observed a young women walking up to class. She was a beautiful blonde
girl and something spoke to my heart and said that I was going to marry
her, I was 19 at the time. I made a point to sit beside her in class and
get to know her as much as possible. Cathy admits now that she was not
interested in me at the time, but my persistence apparently melted her
heart as we were married on September 14, 1981 and graduated together in
November the same year. We are happily married for almost 29 years now.
Another memorable moment was taking Sociology class with Dr. Hugh and
being able to fly to Miami on a group seminar for a couple of days! I
learned about people and living in society, but mainly after two years
of living here I had developed a case of Island Fever and really needed
the break!
I genuinely appreciate all that the Cummings', Jim Bodden and everyone
else involved over the past 40 years have done for the Cayman Islands by
establishing ICCI so that all who desire a higher education can earn a
degree on Island. I pray that the Lord continues to bless this valuable
institution and all who pass through its doors.
Best regards.

"I
choose to attend ICCI as it is the college of choice, where I would be
educated without wondering if my qualification was valid amongst the
global world.
My
sister attended ICCI and we would study together when she came home in
the nights after classes. That is how I learnt of ICCI.
My
experience at ICCI was always of family, friends and hard work. Family,
because that is how I feel due to the closeness of the faculty, friends
and personal family members who have attended ICCI. Hard
work, because along with achievements; I had to burn some midnight
oil studying for exams and preparing for final papers. Friends
– I have met a lot of people while attending ICCI who are now my
friends for life. ICCI
has equipped me with a higher education that was affordable, globally
recognised and of high standards. I am one more person who
has been fortunate amongst many who have achieved a College degree to
make a change in the life of many that I have met and will continue to
meet in my journey.
I
can remember one of my earlier class with Dr. D’s, it was in
psychology, I was so impressed with her wealth of knowledge, of how she
was able to capture my attention. I then continued with
sociology were we covered so much material.
I
can remember the many study meets that we had and most of all I will
always remember the seminar requirements of ICCI. The
Seminars are a few of my greatest memories at ICCI. We
were able to experience diverse cultures, we learnt so much from
visiting with other people from attending different seminars such as the
Religious, Technology, and Urban and Society.
I will always remember
visiting Camellus House in Miami.
I had the privilege to work with people who were in need of a
hot meal and a safe place to rest their head, “the homeless”. I
had the opportunity to visit different religious place of worship,
such as Hindu, Jewish, Christianity, etc. To visit the Miami
International Air
Tower control; a place were I am more
knowledgeable of their daily task requirements and much more
appreciative of the role they play on ground and in air space. I
enjoyed the visits to different places from colleges, businesses, Cuban
heritage day; where we got to experience and learn of urban and rural Miami.
I
remember how we transitioned after Hurricane Ivan, at St Ignatius
(surviving the storm) and were able to return home to the Newlands
campus." |

"Every Faculty and Staff meeting started
with a
moment of silence as is the tradition of the Amish and other similar
Christian
denominations prior to the commencement of group proceedings
Even in the mid 1990's the rural campus
of ICCI set
in beautiful Newlands, had a host of both wild (Cayman parrots-
loudly squawking on a regular basis) and domesticated (horses and
cows that occasionally came loose from their grazing pastures) animals
as
neighbours and occasional visitors.
During one moment of silence at the
start of a
Faculty/Staff meeting, a nearby grazing donkey saw fit to break the
thoughtful
contemplations of the gathered academians with a raucous HAWHEEEE/
HAWHEEE/
HAWHEEEE
The rest of the meeting proceeded on a
very light
and less serious note than that which had been planned on the
agenda."

"I was born in Nicaragua and
learned, from a relative, of ICCI when I searched for an institution to
continue my tertiary education.
I chose ICCI because it offered
me the opportunity, initially, to improve my knowledge of the English
language. I was motivated by the
first course to do a second and to apply as a full time student at the college. A grant from ICCI made it possible and
in 2001 I received a Bachelor’s degree.
The “family environment” at ICCI (friendly and professional) provided:
security, counseling, discipline and skills that would guide me beyond
ICCI. Since then I have earned a
Master’s of Arts in Pastoral Psychology and Counselling.
I am currently in the ESL
Programme at John A. Cumber Primary and supervising our church’s mission in
Cuba.
I will always remember Dr. Hugh
Cummings’ “sketches” of his deep spiritual journey, at breakfast, while
attending an ICCI seminar in Miami. Mrs. W. Rochester’s , strict but humorous,
will be remembered for her “use
your one cent words!”. Every professor will be remembered for their
professionalism and zeal to help make the world a better place through
education." Arthur Henriquez Bent
